The first stage of the championship of Formula Regional Asia 2022 ended with the affirmation of Sebastian Montoya, son of former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo. A historic success for the very young Colombian from Mumbai Falcons, who in fact managed to win his own first overall victory with the single-seaters on the Yas Marina circuit. The prerequisites for reaching this goal had already been glimpsed at the end of qualifying, where Montoya had set the best time, synonymous with pole position.
During the race, the 16-year-old also managed to defend himself against attacks from top-tier rivals such as Arthur Leclerc – Charles’s brother – and Gabriele Minì, Formula 4 champion in 2020. Once the checkered flag was passed, the driver of the Prema Racing – which recently announced its promotion for the Formula Regional European championship – was finally able to celebrate on the top step of the podium, often touched on the last few occasions: “Today I won my first race – commented warmly – and it’s spectacular. I succeeded after getting pole position, in a very intense test. We hope to be able to do it again soon ”. After the celebrations, Montoya junior published a post on Instagram, underlining his enthusiasm for the first place conquered: “FIRST PLACE! After many podiums achieved last season, I got to the top of the podium, and I think you could see all my excitement. – he wrote – I want to thank my parents for their support, my team and sponsors for helping me get here. Now there are two races left this weekend “. The championship will develop in two other tests on Sunday 23 January, and then move to the circuit of Dubai between 27 and 29 January.
