E instead of one: Formula E starts on Saturday in Mexico City, and an exciting season has begun. In the long term, the electric racing series is even expected to inherit Formula 1. At least that's what those who are active in Formula E dream. After all, it is now in its tenth season, so it has shown a certain steadfastness. The protagonists are no longer impressed when former racing drivers claim that Formula E is “abnormal” and like having sex with a rubber doll. In fact, Formula E, which, like Formula 1, is under the responsibility of the FIA and 60 percent is also owned by the American media group Liberty Global, is now recognized and taken seriously. “Formula E is the fastest form of electric racing we have on closed tracks. “It is a sophisticated racing product that enjoys great respect in the motorsport community,” says David Coulthard, once Formula 1 vice world champion.
The fact that well-known car brands such as Porsche, Maserati, Nissan and others are involved also speaks for itself. There will be 17 races this year, with eleven teams competing with two drivers each. Tokyo and Shanghai are new additions, the street circuit in Berlin-Tempelhof is slightly changed. In Europe, races are also scheduled in Misano, Italy, on a new circuit, as well as in Monaco and London. With a purely electric series, the focus is on sustainability. For example, all-weather tires are used exclusively; there are only two sets of tires per race, and in double races there are three. In contrast, Formula 1 is almost wasteful with tires.
