The former director of the Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Airport Barajas José Antonio Álvarez Fernández assured this Monday from the Senate that he was unaware of the arrival of the vice president of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez to this terminal in January 2020, while repeatedly stating that the responsibility for border and customs control lies with the Ministry of the Interior.
In response to various questions from Vox and PP during the investigative commission on all the ramifications of the ‘Koldo case’who was director of the Madrid-Barajas Airport during the arrival of the Venezuelan vice president, has insisted that his position has no jurisdiction in many of the aspects related to this ‘Delcy case’.
As stated, AENA as airport manager does not have information on the identity of the people arriving at the airport and, therefore, was not aware of the Delcy Rodríguez landing in January 2020, while denying any type of instruction from any senior official on this issue.
For this reason, he has repeated on several occasions that the responsibility for border and customs control belongs to the Ministry of the Interior, while he has insisted that he was not aware of the alleged movements of the former minister José Luis Ábaloshis former advisor Koldo García Izaguirre and the alleged perpetrator of the plot Víctor de Aldama through restricted areas of the airport.
Custody of recordings
In any case, the former director of the Airport has defended that the only “extraordinary” action related to this ‘Delcy case’ has been the conservation and custody of the images and subsequent delivery to the court.
Specifically, the recordings that were delivered to the court are from all the cameras inside the general aviation terminal and outside the aviation terminal corporate and the apron area where the plane was parked.
However, the former director of the Madrid-Barajas Airport has said that he has not kept no copy about these recordings, which he guarded from February 2020 to June 2022 because, as he has said, these images are destroyed after 30 days.
In this regard, he has denied receiving any call or pressure to delete or boycott these recordings about the arrival of Delcy Rodríguez to the Airport, while he has stated that José Luis Ábalos has never called him or met with him and that he does not know Koldo García Izaguirre either.
However, he has assured that Delcy Rodríguez did not use any of the meeting rooms. Barajas authorities nor any of the ‘VIP rooms’ managed directly by AENA. “Is the Barajas VIP area in national territory?” the PP senator asked about it, to which the former director of the Airport replied that this would have to be answered by the National Police because it is their responsibility.
