At the 2021 Motor Show in Los Angeles, which will take place in the final days of November, Ford demonstrated the capabilities of its Eluminator system, a sort of conversion kit that transforms old endothermic models into ‘scary’ electric cars with high power. The American brand brought to California a 1978 F-100 pickup, whose vintage style is unmistakable, with a power of 480 horsepower and four-wheel drive.
Called F-100 Eluminator, the concept uses the same twin-engine configuration as Ford’s Mustang Mach-E, which also gives it 634 Nm of torque. Designed by Ford’s Performance Division, the Eluminator system was installed for the occasion on a custom chassis created by Roadster Shop and MLe Racecars. For this reason, it also got lowered suspension, Forgeline aluminum wheels and a specific paint job. Inside, Mach-E-style digital screens have flourished and the seats have been renewed, with an overall comfort that is certainly greater than the original version of the pickup.
Ford’s Eluminator electric motors are already available to order. The system is about 3,500 euros, and is aimed at those who want to electrify their vintage car with a transversely oriented engine, even better if it is a Ford brand, without going to intervene on the exterior design. Each Eluminator e-crate engine produces 281 horsepower and according to Ford “is road legal in all 50 states”.
Ford Performance plans to develop a larger list of components for the Eluminator powertrain, including battery systems, traction controllers and inverters to close the loop on complete turnkey aftermarket electrification solutions. In the meantime, however, we continue with i restomod ‘official’, and the F-100 pickup is the perfect representation of how an electric motor can hide under any endothermic car, without the charm of the shapes being affected in any way.
