Senate CCJ will analyze return of insurance next Tuesday (May 7) after request for review
In a speech in the Senate plenary on Tuesday (April 30, 2024), the senator Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM) criticized the discussion surrounding the possible return of the old DPVAT, now renamed SPVAT (Mandatory Insurance for Victims of Traffic Accidents).
The congressman highlighted that the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) called an extraordinary session for May 7, when the Executive bill that creates insurance, the PLP, will be analyzed. 233 of 2023. The text was on the CCJ’s agenda on Tuesday (April 30), but a collective view was granted, which postponed the vote.
According to the text, SPVAT must be used to pay compensation for accidents. Plínio described the possible return of insurance as “a ghost that returns to torment the population”. He emphasized that, in addition to the new tax, the same project includes an increase, by R$15 billion, in the limit for Union expenses.
“This government has a desire to collect, collect, but cutting meat, which is good, doesn’t cut it. […] Everything indicates that we only managed to postpone this turtle that is coming, this mockery, this slap in the face, this extortion. The Brazilian population can no longer bear any type of tax, any type of fee, any type of imposition”he highlighted.
Plínio highlighted that the old DPVAT was extinguished during the former president’s government Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and that the absence of the charge did not generate a noticeable impact. The senator argued that the population should have the option to choose whether or not they wish to purchase insurance.
“I’m just advocating here that we do our part, and not allow the population to be extorted with every difficulty that the government goes through, a difficulty created by it, to give money to artists, to give money to social movements”he said.
