Historic debut with victory for the women’s national team of Saudi Arabia: just a month after his formation, the representative played their first match in the Maldives where they beat the Seychelles 2-0 in a friendly. For the occasion, the players of the ultra-conservative country wore the traditional green t-shirt with white shorts but without the veil and long pants as is the case at home. On Thursday they will return to the field to face the Maldives at the Malè stadium. Before the game, the Saudi coach, the German Monica Stubb, underlined the importance of what she called “a historic moment”: “I asked the players to enjoy it and be proud to have the opportunity to live this experience, which It’s only the beginning”.
“This is a historic day not only for you but for anyone who loves football,” congratulated the legendary former Brazilian striker Pele. In 2020 the Saudi Football Federation (Saff) had launched the first edition of the women’s championship with the participation of 16 teams and the aim of involving at least one thousand players. Women’s football represents a new step by Saudi Arabia towards the recognition of women’s rights, promoted with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s cautious reform plan. Since 2017 women have been able to drive and since last year they have been able to go on pilgrimage without a mahram, that is, a male guardian, and live alone without the consent of a guardian (the father, a brother, a guardian appointed by the family). Among the strenuous achievements there is also the possibility of requesting a passport to travel abroad independently and of engage in professions such as driving taxis and trains.
