DHe 1. FC Kaiserslautern is still stumbling towards relegation from the second Bundesliga under new coach Friedhelm Funkel. The former champions lost 4-0 (0-0) to Karlsruher SC in their second game under Funkel and could slip into a direct relegation spot on Sunday. On Funkel's debut, he at least managed to win a point in Nuremberg.
Marvin Wanitzek (51st), Igor Matanovic (58th), Paul Nebel (81st) and Budu Siwziwadze (90th + 1) scored the goals for KSC, which is firmly in the middle of the table. It was Karlsruhe's third away win of the season.
After a minute's silence for the late Andreas Brehme, the encounter only slowly gained momentum. Funkel had prescribed a defensive basic order for the hosts. Karlsruhe dominated the game, but the guests didn't have any great chances in the first half. Kaiserslautern also remained imprecise and harmless in the transition game.
After the change, the game picked up significantly. Just 25 seconds after the restart, Marlon Ritter missed the Red Devils' lead, shortly afterwards Wanitzek made it better after a nice pass from Dzenis Burnic. Matanovic increased the score with his eighth goal of the season, and Nebel made the final decision.
Meanwhile, Hannover 96 embarrassed themselves at bottom team VfL Osnabrück. Due to the 0-1 (0-0) defeat, Lower Saxony missed out on the relegation spot. For Hannover it was the first defeat of the year after four wins. Third-placed Hamburger SV can increase its lead over Lower Saxony to four points when coach Steffen Baumgart makes his debut on Sunday. Erik Engelhardt scored the goal for Osnabrück (61st).
After a weak first half, Hannover initially fought for offensive actions. Havard Nielsen (48th) put his shot attempt over the goal, Marcel Halstenberg (51st) was unable to take advantage of two shot chances, as was Louis Schaub (52nd), who shot a ball from a distance just over the goal. Then the Osnabrück team could celebrate: 96 keeper Ron-Robert Zieler was unable to defuse a corner, Robert Tesche brought the ball into the middle again, where Engelhardt scored with a header from close range.
Hertha BSC had to be content with a 1-1 (0-1) draw at Eintracht Braunschweig. Fabio Kaufmann (14th) gave the hosts the lead. Ibrahim Maza (52nd) equalized for Hertha. In the final phase, the Berliners missed out on their third win in a row. Braunschweig's Hasan Kurucay (77th) was shown a red card for serious foul play.
Hertha was particularly disappointing in the first half and was punished early on for its passive style of play. Kaufmann picked up a bad pass from Andreas Bouchalakis in his own penalty area and took the lead. The guests returned from the half-time break with a completely different body language. Substitute Haris Tabakovic missed the equalizer twice shortly after the restart. Maza, who was also substituted at half-time, did better in the 52nd minute.
When Braunschweig found itself outnumbered in the final phase, Hertha pushed for the winning goal. But there were no good opportunities for the Berliners, even despite the majority. In the table, Hertha is now five points behind third-placed Hamburger SV, who host Elversberg on Sunday. Braunschweig is 15th in the table. two points ahead of 16th place Kaiserslautern.
