The mazarronero falls on the last lap when he wanted to pass the Italian and his goodbye to Moto3 is lackluster
Pedro Acosta wanted it all in his farewell to Moto3. The 400 people from Mazarron who cheered on their countryman from the blue grandstand of the Cheste circuit had a great time, as did the Spanish fans who have found in the ‘Tiburon’ of Mazarrón the pilot they had been looking for for years. But the end was not happy. The dreamed party in Valencia was postponed because the world champion of the small category went to the ground in the last lap.
Acosta polished his first pole of the season with an excellent start. For the first time he defended a first place on the grid and he did it perfectly and kept the first place. The scare came at Turn 4. Lorenzo Fellon and Darryn Binder fell. In order not to collide with him, Yamanaka also went to the ground. Luckily, there were no accidents and everyone was successful.
Shortly after, the man from Mazarron had another scare and was close to falling. He saved him, but lost the position of privilege. Suzuki took command. But Mazarrón’s ‘Jaws’ quickly recovered to make several overtakings without hesitation and return to the lead. He dominated the race at all times.
The Italian Foggia, covered throughout the race, appeared from the top positions in the final stage. The last lap was reached with many drivers in the fight. Acosta passed Foggia in turn 1, but the Italian took the inside in 2. Mazarrón’s touched the rear of Foggia’s Honda and crashed in 4. The Race Direction studied the incident, to find out if there was any negligence of Foggia, who did not go to the ground but lost positions. Migno also fell.
Sergio García was first, but Xavi Artigas attacked him and passed in the last corner. Artigas, a ‘rookie’ who had not been too lucky this year, won by resisting on the straight. The first victory of his life. Artigas went crazy and broke the dome with a blow celebrating his victory.
Acosta, resigned, returned to the box mounted on a scooter and waving to the people who were cheering him on from the rostrum. The lesser evil is that the third place achieved by his teammate Jaume Masiá gives the title of brands to KTM, something that the teams always value very much. Acosta, however, had everything ready to take a mass bath in front of his people. He carried two flags, one from his fan club and one from Spain. He put them in his box and went out to congratulate the winners. The champion did not have the party he deserved in Cheste. It’s the same: he can get even next year in Moto2.
