President Joe Biden fears the hurricane could be the deadliest in Florida history. “The numbers are unclear, but we are hearing the first reports that may indicate a significant loss of life.”
Ian sweeps across the state of Florida like a tropical storm, but may regain strength once over the Atlantic. The hurricane previously caused extensive damage in the far west of Cuba and moved across the Gulf of Mexico to southwest Florida. There, the coast near the cities of Sarasota, Venice and Fort Myers received the heaviest blows. Meter-high waves hit the coast and heavy rains caused flooding in large areas, including the mentioned cities about 250 kilometers northwest of Miami. The tornado hit boats on the shore and destroyed buildings and bridges.
