The Oilers won the Classic in the fifth final match of the Men's F-League and are just one win away from the title. The players liked the atmosphere of the match played in the Helsinki Ice Hall, but there was still room for improvement.
Oilers took the lead for the first time in the men's F-League final series. On Wednesday night, the Espoo team lost the Tampere Classic in the Helsinki Ice Hall with 8–6 goals and now leads the final series with a 3–2 victory.
Enjoyed a four-goal night Justus Kainulainen gave the Oilers the lead just seven seconds into the game. After two sets, the Oilers led 7–3 and seemed to be marching to a clear victory.
In the final set, Classic had a goal but could not score the equalizing goal despite the heavy pressure.
In the Nordics the difference between the teams was primarily the efficiency of finishing. The Oilers shoveled the ball into the bag from just about every possible spot.
“I don't know why we can get in from all places. There has also been an accident in that respect”, completed two goals Aaro Astala spun around.
The best hit of the evening came from Astala's stage. The long-haired striker put the ball into the net from the corner of the goal by first lifting it into the air Classic goalkeeper Lassi Toriseva forward and then lifting the ball with the tip of the platform to the roof of the goal.
“It was a gimmick about yard games taught by my cousin. A little sip from the palm and the air in. I tried to chip to the back corner, but it was short, so I pulled the tip to it. It turned out to be a good jam when Toriseva anticipated the back corner”, Astala recounted the 3-0 goal she scored.
The Oilers got a lot of possessions in the middle zone, some with good shaving, some with easy mistakes from the Classic.
“The problem is that the goal price for the Oilers is too cheap. We get clear marking errors and give too much space. That's where the problems come from,” Classicin Nico Salo regretted.
Final series moved to big arenas on Wednesday, away from the teams' usual home halls. According to the series regulations, they are too small.
On Wednesday, Nordis had almost 2,000 viewers.
“A really great atmosphere”, Oilers' Astala was happy.
“We wondered if the weekday game and the slushy weather would affect the number of spectators, but there was a huge crowd. The sound riot was also amazing. Every time something happened, there was a good buzz.”
The ice rink game was also to Nico Salo's liking.
“The field feels bigger and you can better understand the space. The audience was also positive today,” Salo said.
However, the experienced player, who played in five World Cups in his career, also found room for improvement in the framework.
“You have to put a little plaster on that platform, I would have liked to have elastic parquet laid underneath. Now it felt like we were running on concrete. Both gangs are gathering guys for the spring games, so it would be good if the starting point was in order as well.”
Championship is a break for the Oilers on Saturday, when the teams meet again at the Nordis. Classic from Tampere is the home team on Saturday.
“Then we'll come with a different feeling when we have a “home advantage” here at the Helsinki ice rink,” Salo laughed.
