Rescuers rescued more than 20 people from floods in the Australian state of Victoria on Monday, and officials warned of more flooding as storms hit an already waterlogged area in the latest wave of stormy weather to hit the country's east coast.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected to drop up to 100 millimeters of rain, more than the average rainfall in a month in some areas, on a wide belt extending from southwestern New South Wales state to northeastern Victoria on Monday morning, according to the Office Meteorological.
Rescuers in the state of Victoria received nearly 700 calls for help and conducted 26 rescue operations in the early hours of Monday, especially around the town of Bendigo, about 120 kilometers north of Melbourne.
Authorities have issued seven flood warnings across Victoria, and dangerous flooding is possible until Monday afternoon as rain falls east towards the coast.
Eastern Australia was exposed to rain, floods, and even a tropical cyclone during the summer, when many expected the El Niño phenomenon to be accompanied by dry weather and forest fires.
