Five tricks to clean and maintain your mattress for longer

A good mattress, maintained in ideal conditions, is essential for our rest, so not taking proper care of it can condition it or prevent proper relaxation during the night.

When carrying out general house cleaning, it is also important to take into account the mattresses, since they accumulate a large amount of dust and mites during daily use.

Regardless of the material or model of mattress you have, here are some tricks to prolong its useful life as much as possible.

Vacuum the mattress regularly

Because we use them for a large number of hours every day, mattresses are one of the household objects that accumulate the most dirt, including traces of dust or skin.

One of the main recommendations regarding bed care is to change the sheets weekly. This allows you to air out the mattress as well as allowing you to sleep on a clean and fresh surface continuously. It is advisable to vacuum the mattress at least a couple of times a month during any of the bedding changes. In addition, rotating the mattress every quarter will allow you to avoid uneven wear, since by rotating it 180 degrees you will be able to distribute the weight evenly.


Use a mattress protector

Waterproof protectors are one of the main allies in mattress care. The accessory not only prevents stains caused by liquids or sweat from penetrating the fabrics, but also prevents dust or mites from accumulating.

This is placed on the base of the mattress in the same way as a fitted sheet, and can be used for a couple of weeks before being cleaned. In addition, it is advisable to pay attention to the characteristics of each protector, since some have breathability benefits that will be more useful in hotter areas.

Clean stains immediately

If any liquid has been accidentally spilled on the mattress, it is essential to act quickly, preventing the drink from penetrating deeply into the fabrics, permanently staining them.

To clean liquid stains easily, mix warm water with mild detergent and dampen a microfiber cloth. Next, rub gently on the stain, trying to wet the mattress as little as possible. After that, leave the surface as close to a window as possible.

For more complex stains such as blood, sweat or vomit, among others, mix baking soda with warm water on the stain and let it sit for half an hour. After that, rub the mixture gently with a damp microfiber cloth. Finally, vacuum the entire area removing any remains of baking soda.


Air the mattress regularly

One of the keys to avoiding the accumulation of dirt, mites or moisture is to air the mattress daily. Leave the sheets on the bottom of the bed when you wake up, leaving most of the surface in the open air. Open the windows so the breeze can circulate more easily.

In this way, it is important to place the bed in an area where it receives daily sunlight and near a window, to facilitate natural ventilation. On the other hand, remove all pillows and cushions from the bed and avoid placing clothes or other objects on it while it airs out.

Don’t forget the pillows

Like mattresses, pillows are one of the accessories that accumulate the most dirt during rest. Over time and use, these not only accumulate dirt, but also lose their shape, making it impossible to maintain good posture during sleep and potentially causing neck and back pain.

Replacing them from time to time can significantly help with rest. In addition, it is important – as with the mattress – to use hypoallergenic covers that help keep them fresh and free of bacteria. If your pillows are washable, put them in the washing machine along with your bedding from time to time to clean them effectively.
