bAround 20,000 pigs died in a fire at a large pig fattening facility in the Altmark district of Salzwedel. A spokesman for the Altmark rescue control center said this on Friday evening. Two firefighters were slightly injured during the large-scale operation that lasted hours. The spokesman said that 10 to 14 stables burned down. The fire, which broke out in the afternoon, was still not under control by evening. “There is no end in sight yet,” said the spokesman.
In total, around 64,000 animals were kept in the facility, including many piglets. Some stables could have been opened in time, which is why pigs were running around outside in the evening. According to the spokesman, there was no danger to buildings outside the mast facility; it was isolated. There is still no information about the cause of the fire.
In the evening, the approximately 150 firefighters who had been on duty since 2 p.m. were to be replaced. According to earlier information, twelve fire departments from the surrounding villages around the facility in Binde am Arendsee were involved. In the meantime, 24 emergency vehicles were on site. Several veterinarians were also called in.
There had already been a fire in the complex three years ago. At that time, property damage amounted to 50,000 euros. The Altmark control center issued a hazard warning due to heavy smoke development.
