Although the fire has been signaled, the fire is still raging. “The wind makes it extremely difficult to put out the fire. We are now focusing on preventing the fire from spreading to buildings across the street and letting the fire burn out in a controlled manner,” said the spokesperson for the security region.
Thirty people were evacuated from their apartments shortly after the fire broke out. They were initially received in a building of a sailing school on the island, the security region reported. The Red Cross has aid workers on site at the shelter, a spokeswoman for the aid organization said. “We help with the registration of those affected, map their needs and provide information and psychosocial help.”
According to the security region, the affected residents will be transferred to a hotel where they can spend the night. “Returning to their apartments tonight is out of the question. Frankly, I expect that that will probably no longer be possible at all, given the damage to the complex,” said the spokesperson.
The weather conditions complicate the deployment of the fire brigade. The village is located on the Kagereiland, so support for the fire brigade had to come via a ferry.
