Equipment was sent to RS to assist with drainage after the floods that hit the State
Four sets of high-capacity floating pumps from Sabesp are in operation in Rio Grande do Sul to assist with drainage work in areas flooded by floods.
There are 2 sets operating in Porto Alegre and 2 in Canoas. Due to the urgency, the equipment was assembled within 24 hours. According to the company, sets of this size can take up to 8 days to be installed.
“(The pumps) are being very effective in draining the water that accumulated due to this intense rain. Sabesp still has 14 electromechanical teams on site helping to restore the rainwater and sewage pumps”says Agostinho Geraldes, Superintendent of Strategic Maintenance at Sabesp.
How pumps work
Used in the Cantareira System during the severe drought that hit the São Paulo Metropolitan Region a decade ago, each of the pumps weighs around 10 tons and has the capacity to transfer up to 2,000 l/s of water from one location to another.
As they are floating, the pumps “follow” the water level, avoiding the need to move from one point to another. “They are operating 24 hours (a day), all the time supplying the water flow. A technician also monitors the movement of the water flow, if he suddenly sees any material”says Geraldes.
Watch (1min14s):
Another 14 sets will be assembled to remove water accumulated in large areas on site. Of the total, 4 were taken by FAB (Brazilian Air Force) planes and the rest were transported by Brazilian Army trucks.
Sabesp also sent teams to Rio Grande do Sul. In total, 57 professionals and 21 vehicles, in addition to technical equipment, work in the State in water system installations damaged by floods, such as pumping equipment and pumping stations, and in distribution of drinking water.
