The Netherlands finished sixth in the medal standings at the Olympics. That is one place lower than at the previous two Winter Games in Sochi (2014) and Pyeongchang (2018).
TeamNL collected seventeen medals in China in the past two weeks: eight gold, five silver and four bronze. In Sochi, the Dutch sports team experienced the most successful Winter Games ever eight years ago with 24 medals (eight gold, seven silver and nine source). Four years ago, in Pyeongchang, the counter came to twenty medals: eight gold, six silver and six bronze.
The objective of chef de mission Carl Verheijen in Beijing was ‘towards twenty medals’, but that is just not going to work. On the final day, there is nowhere left for the Netherlands to pick up. Nevertheless, Verheijen looks back with satisfaction.
The lower score now is due to the long track skaters. In Pyeongchang they won sixteen medals, now there are twelve. Just like in 2018, the short trackers came in at four places. Kimberley Bos provided a first with the first Dutch Olympic medal in the skeleton. In Vancouver (2010), TeamNL won only eight medals: four gold, one silver and three bronze.

Norway, as with the previous Winter Games, is the most successful. The country set a record with sixteen gold medals. The Norwegians also won eight silver and thirteen bronze. Germany finished second. That was also the case in South Korea in 2018. The German team leaves the Chinese capital with twelve gold medals, ten silver and five bronze.
China surprised with the third place in the final standings, just above the United States. The host nation ended up with fifteen plaques, nine of which were gold. Just like TeamNL, the United States and Sweden won eight Olympic titles, only they are higher in the final standings because of more silver and/or bronze medals. The Russian sports team achieved the most slices after Norway, 32. Yet it lagged behind, for example, the Netherlands because of fewer gold medals.
Italy, which will host the Winter Games in four years’ time, finished thirteenth (twice gold, seven silver and eight bronze). Canada, still number 3 in the final standings four years ago, now disappointed with eleventh place.
