F1 vs Formula E
The technical characteristics of a single-seater Formula 1 mean that the latter can be considered more competitive and better performing than other open-wheel production cars. A consideration that is valid if you compare F1 with Formula Edespite the evident progress made over the last nine seasons and with the tenth having just begun in Mexico, also in the name of cars Gen3.
A duel already feasible
Yet, if we focus on the comparison between F1 and Formula E, there are 100% top flight experts who believe that this challenge could actually be possible without an excessive gap. Above all, the Envision Technical Director: Sylvain Filippi. According to the engineer of the British house, interviewed by Forbeswith some set-up adjustments the single-seaters can already seriously compete with an F1.
What to change
“It's all one question of aerodynamic load – has explained – today we can create a electric motor capable of beating a Formula One in acceleration and even to provide the same top speeds. However, much of the lap times come from downforce. Formula E also uses half road and half racing tyres. If Formula E cars mounted the slicks would already be close to Formula 1 lap times. The weight is already the same, and with the same aerodynamics and grip they would be equally fast.”
Waiting for Gen4
In addition, the differences between F1 and Formula E could be further reduced with the next generation of cars, i.e Gen4. The tests, which will begin in 2026, will be aimed at the debut of these single-seaters in the 2027 championship, with performances that would get increasingly closer to the top series, or even surpass it: “With the Gen4 it will be game over”concluded Filippi.
