Consumer groups advocating for children are urging the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the video game manufacturer Electronic Arts on marketing loot boxes to young players of his popular soccer game FIFA: Ultimate Team.
According to reports, buying loot boxes using virtual currency in the FUT game, “takes advantage of the lack of financial literacy of children and adolescentsThe report comes from a number of associations including the nonprofit Fairplay and the Center for Digital Democracy.
The commission should determine whether the measures used to encourage the purchase of these loot boxes violate the FTC Act’s prohibitions against unfair and deceptive trading practices. This letter essentially asks the FTC to seek answers to 10 questions.
Currently EA has not yet commented on the statement: also this week, 18 associations from different European countries have asked for definitive regulation on loot boxes. The affair is currently underway.
