The failures of Alonso and Vettel
Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel are the names of the last two drivers hired by Ferrari after they had already reached the top of Formula 1 on several occasions with other teams. However, neither of the two multiple world champions succeeded – dressed in red – ha give a world title to the people of Maranello. From 2025 he will try to break this curse Lewis Hamilton.
The British champion will find himself alongside the 'golden boy' of Ferrari, Charles Leclerc, who made winning a title with Ferrari the main reason for his F1 career. This charming couple will have to try to break an abstinence from titles which for Ferrari has now lasted since the two-year period 2007-2008 between the Drivers' and Constructors' championships.
Hamilton's challenge
However, an old acquaintance of Maranello, Felipe Massa's former race engineer Rob Smedley, is convinced that Hamilton is the right person to achieve such a feat. “I think he's such a consummate professional that he will lift every sector of the team – Smedley said on the podcast F1 Nation – and I think the difference, compared to when I was there and when Fernando was there [Alonso]both which have demonstrated their potential in recent years“.
In fact, the 50-year-old British engineer is convinced that Ferrari is not that far from Red Bull in the battle for the World Cup: “Also last year they proved to be one of the few teams capable of imposing themselves on Red Bull, especially in qualifying – has explained – but there are areas where they need to improve”.
Hamilton will serve precisely this purpose: “I believe Lewis can definitely be a catalyst to crystallize the team around him, or around him and Charles. Sometimes a team needs an element that helps them give that extra 1%. And when you're already giving 110%, giving that extra 1-2% makes a huge difference.”.
