SF-24: the mission is to track down Verstappen
“Less than three tenths”, “between three tenths and five tenths”, “Verstappen takes half a second faster than Perez”: the tests in Bahrain did not answer all the questions of the day before, and of all the questions it is the mother of all questions how much advantage Red Bull still has over Ferrari. If Verstappen made a loud statement on Day 1, trailing the competition by more than a second, on the third and final day where the Dutchman took to the track in the afternoon, there was no display of muscular strength from the three-time world champion .
Verstappen and Red Bull were 'limited' to keeping a fast and constant pace to say the least in the three stints faced with the three compounds that will be used next weekend. No actual qualifying simulation and even less no race simulation. The real strength of the RB20 will only be discovered in a weekmeanwhile Ferrari took center stage in the tests in Bahrain both in terms of single lap performance and in terms of consistency in terms of race pace.
'Red-tinted test, Red Bull hidden' title Il Resto del Carlino: “Better to tell the truth to the reader – writes Leo Turrini – we saw a wild Verstappen on the race pace. In a week the F1 World Championship will begin with an obvious favourite, the Dutchman at the wheel of his Red Bull. The Ferrari? It wasn't bad, but Red Bull is still ahead.”. “Red Bull is credited with an advantage of between 3 and 5 tenths compared to her opponents and hid – we read in the columns of Repubblica – and yet Ferrari is there.”
'Bright red: not a bad start' is the title of Giorgio Terruzzi's comment on the Corriere della Sera which underlines: “Ferrari is in the news. Nothing sensational, let's be clear, but the red seen in Bahrain, in the foggy dawn of this World Cup, is lively. The SF-24 seems more toned and promising than its older sister. She chases, of course, with a nice physique, a wider stride. For starters, that's enough.”
