The aerodynamic wizard relegated to the Hypercar?
“Adrian Newey in Ferrari? I hope not”. Helmut Marko he was very honest when he was questioned about the prospect that would see the designer one step away from following Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari starting from 2025 (the timing will then necessarily slip due to the gardening leave).
The chaos in Red Bull it could lead to the fragmentation of the team that has dominated the last two F1 seasons. Jos Verstappen declared that if Christian Horner continues to occupy his position the team will explode and the reference was not only to his son Max and his point of reference Helmut Marko. In fact, relations between Christian Horner and Adrian Newey have also deteriorated.
Already in the weeks preceding the presentation of the RB20 we had gathered rumors now also hypothesized by the German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport. Newey's dissatisfaction with Horner arises from the latter's desire to relegate Newey to the RB17 Hypercar project for reasons attributable to the budget cap. From 2026 the FIA regulation relating to the expense ceiling will no longer accept the inclusion of 'part-time' salaries, if a resource has worked even just 10% of his working hours for the F1 team his salary will be included at 100%. The three most expensive salaries are excluded from the budget cap, but in Red Bull there are many top management figures considering that Horner and Marko are already classified as 'Director'. Horner would therefore like to make 'space' by moving Newey to another project, a move that could move Newey directly to another team.
