Alberto Núñez Feijóo maintained this Thursday, in Brussels, during the summit of the European People’s Party (EPP) prior to the European Council, a “supposedly neutral position” with the possibility of establishing reception centers for migrants outside the European Union. A debate sponsored by the Italian president, Giorgia Meloniafter Italy has implemented this system through an agreement with Albania, border country to the community pact to which it has already sent 16 migrants transported on a military ship to the Albanian port of Shengjin.
“European leaders are increasingly aware and this concern is growing, constant, continuous and does not distinguish between ideologies“, Feijóo simply said after being asked, on more than one occasion, in the press conference after the meeting with your community partners. “While countries and their leaders are seeking points of agreement to fight irregular migration, Sánchez is left alone in this debate“, attacked the President of the Government, who has taken a position in the opposite corner to Meloni, with more and more followers within the Union.
So many that it was Von der Leyen herself who warmed up the eve of the European Council by sending a letter to the Twenty-seven where he proposed to continue “exploring possible paths forward regarding the idea of developing return centers outside the EU.” An express allusion to the agreement between Italy and Albania to which Feijóo has avoided adhering, at least verbally. That “supposedly neutral position” that the PP leader’s team talks about in conversation with Vozpópuliaware of the controversy that the measure has generated in different social sectors given the possible violation of human rights – such as asylum – that it may entail.
The option, however, included within the “innovative solutions” of which Von der Leyen speaks, is viewed favorably by a large part of the community partners. Countries like France (Macron, center), Germany (Scholz, socialist), Italy (Meloni, right) or Hungary (Orbán, extreme right), governed by ideologies that cover the entire political spectrum, although united by the aspiration of directing the European project towards a kind of shield against irregular migration.
But Sánchez, who also witnessed how the Migration and Asylum Pact which was approved during the Spanish presidency, at the end of 2023, and whose full entry into force was scheduled for 2026, has become obsolete even before being applied. “There is no magic solution nor an egalitarian and mimetic solution between all countriesbut what we cannot in any case is not to have an immigration policy and remain isolated,” said the leader of the PP during a trip in which, more than to delve into the immigration debate – which also, that and no other was the leitmotiv of everything that revolved around the summit – took the opportunity to internationalize the internal issues of Spanish politics.
Trip to Berlin to meet with Merz
“It is evident that we are facing a vital emergency from an institutional point of view”Feijóo said at the press conference after his meeting with the EPP partners and his meeting with Von der Leyen, to whom he reported the latest known revelations about the Koldo case and the indictment this Wednesday of the State Attorney General, Alvaro Garcia Ortizby the Supreme Court and his refusal to resign.
“How is someone who is accused precisely of breaking the law going to be able to defend legality? What could be more serious for a prosecutor than having the highest court in your country investigate you?” launched the PP leader, insisting again and again in it “reputational damage” What this situation means for Spain. The Galician also expressed his satisfaction that the Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment portfolios will be held by the PP in the next European legislature, one of Feijóo’s demands during the 9-J campaign.
Feijóo will continue this Friday with his European agenda – strengthened in recent weeks in order to lead a “alliance against irregular migration”, as announced on September 13 after a meeting with Mitsotakis in Athens– with a trip to Berlin to meet with the leader of the CDU, Friedrich Merzcompanion of Von der Leyen and Manfred Weber. The leader of the PP, this Friday, will address practically exclusively the “need to apply a firm, responsible, humanitarian and European immigration policy” in his meeting with his German counterpart.
