In the second part of ‘Inside Out’, anxiety, shame, envy and boredom abruptly appear in the protagonist’s control room to tame the usual joy, sadness, disgust, fear and anger. I imagine Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s ‘Inside Out’ dominated by another character with a dark appearance, gloomy features, a suspicious look and a jaded expression: cynicism. Cynicism in Feijóo sends any other basic emotion to ostracism. Cynicism controls the controls of his brain machine like a NASA technician.
The RAE defines cynicism as “Shamelessness in lying or in the defense and practice of vituperable actions or doctrines.” There are those who tend to think that cynicism is an advanced trait of intelligence, an attribute comparable to experience. I believe that cynicism is an almost existential condition in politics, loaded with the worst of amorality and theatricality. Although total integrity is non-existent in any human being, one can not always be upright or honest, without falling into the lifeline of cynicism.
