The party of compadres and comadres is one of the celebrations that takes place, with much hubbub and merriment, as a prelude to the carnivals. In the midst of an atmosphere of joy, friendly ties are reinforced through dance, music, color, religious rituals and free delivery of tasty food and drinks.
What does the festival of comadres and compadres represent?
This celebration represents the social recognition of the people who are called godfathers and godmothersthat is, “spiritual fathers and mothers”, who will be key players in helping to raise their godchildren, when their respective relatives are absent or face some difficulty.

This festival that brings together hundreds of people is celebrated two Thursdays before the start of the carnivals.
First, it is celebratedCompadres Thursdayand the following week, theComadres Thursday. Both events involve the entire community, who go out to the different parades and participate in the parades to liven up the atmosphere.
What regions celebrate the festival of compadres and comadres?

Ayacucho
This event takes place in the province of Huamanga. Here, the compadres along with the entire population participate in the different troupes accompanied by different bands of musicians.
The comadres carry ropes called 'killis', where offerings hang, such as seasonal fruits and vegetables. These gifts are delivered to the churches El Calvario, San Sebastián and San Agustín, where masses are usually celebrated on Thursdays.
Apurimac
In this region, ritual offerings are made orsaymaswith coca leaves, llama fat, incense and three types of cobcorn. The purpose is to ask for protection for the livestock.
Cusco
Cusco citizens make dolls to hang on their door frames. Each one carries a phrase that highlights the qualities of each person. In this celebration, competitions of the toys funniest, with the most original messages and full of feeling.
Junin
This festival takes place in the district of Bale, province of Jauja. The compadres and the comadres give gifts, which causes uproar among the population.
