Analysts stressed that the US administration has become troubled by the political fissures that emerged from the results of the recent presidential elections.
The concept of domestic terrorism includes, according to US law, “activities that involve acts dangerous to human life, that violate the criminal laws of the United States or any individual state, and that appear intended to intimidate or coerce the civilian population, to influence government policy by intimidation or coercion, or influence government behavior by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping, and occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.”
And at the end of last month, three retired American generals warned that another insurgency more violent than the storming of the Capitol could occur after the 2024 presidential election, and might be “instigated by the military.”
The American magazine, Newsweek, also warned of motorized Republicans, describing it as a “time bomb” targeting the Capitol building, fueled by misinformation woven through social media, pointing out that they are “well-armed.”
Reasons for creation and tasks
“The Biden administration is creating a new unit in the Department of Justice to address domestic terrorism in the wake of last year’s Capitol attack by supporters of former President Donald Trump,” said Matthew Olsen, the assistant attorney general for the US Department of Justice’s National Security Division.
On the reasons for its creation, Olsen added during his speech at a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee: “We face an increasing threat from domestic violent extremists, that is, individuals in the United States who seek to commit violent criminal acts to further domestic social or political goals.”
Regarding its duties, he explained, “The new unit will be stationed in the National Security Department and will work to ensure that these issues are properly dealt with and coordinated effectively, throughout the department and across the country.”
On January 6, 2021, the events of the “Capitol Storm” occurred, after Trump supporters attacked the Congress building, questioning the integrity of the elections won by Democratic candidate Biden, and the violence led to human and material losses.
A revolution is coming
At the end of last December, Generals Paul Eaton, Antonio Taguba and Stephen Anderson published an article in which they warned of the possibility of “a successful coup d’etat next time.”
In an interview with National Public Radio, Eaton, a retired major general in the US Army, said, “We thought this was likely to happen after we watched how 124 retired generals and admirals signed a letter questioning the 2020 election. We are concerned about that.”
“We are interested in seeing measures in place to make sure our military is better prepared for a contested election, should that happen in 2024,” he added.
Eaton indicated that the possibility of a coup after the upcoming presidential elections is “minimal”, but he reiterated that it is “a possibility that exists and we must prepare for it.”
In an open letter, 124 retired generals in the US armed forces had questioned the current President Joe Biden’s psychological and physical condition, and raised questions about the presidential elections that took place in 2020.
Overthrow the government by force
And at the end of last month, Newsweek magazine met a veteran named “Mike Nizhnani” after his inflammatory views on social media saw a great reaction, as his posts on the social networking site “Quora” garnered more than 4 million views overall.
The American warrior is one of many ordinary Republicans who own guns, and in recent months they have spoken frankly of the need to bring down, by force if necessary, a federal government they view as illegitimate and an overstatement of American freedom.
Millions of potential fellow insurgents will be there, Niznani says, a “time bomb” targeting the Capitol. “There are a lot of fully armed people wondering what’s happening to this country. Are we going to allow Biden to continue destroying it? Or do we need to get rid of him? We’ll take a lot before To resist.. the elections of 2024 may be the motive.”
splits and cracks
The academic specializing in international affairs, Samir Al-Kashef, said that the attempt to storm the Capitol revealed the magnitude of the challenges facing the American political system, as the political divisions and fissures produced by the results of the recent presidential elections exceeded all expectations.
Al-Kashef added, in statements to “Sky News Arabia”, that what happened on January 6, 2021 is an exceptional event in the history of the United States, and it served as a warning bell about the possibility of the disintegration of the United States, despite its difficulty, but the fire always starts with a spark, and then if there is no A force that protects and fortifies democracy, as it is in an unsafe situation.
He pointed out that the past elections caused divisions even within the military, which prompted dozens of generals to question them, thus cementing the growing belief among many Republicans that the federal government is an illegitimate tyranny that must be overthrown by any means necessary.
And in November, a PBS poll revealed that Democrats are concerned that voter suppression and election interference by Republican state officials have deprived millions of Americans of their views at the polls and represent the greatest threat to US elections.
While Republicans claim that Democrats have indeed rigged vote counts to steal the presidential election, according to a CNN poll, more than three-quarters of Republicans believe Biden’s 2020 election victory was fraudulent.
