The ‘signal value’ that the cabinet has set to indicate when new corona measures must be introduced has almost been reached. In the past seven days, an average of 94 Covid-19 patients were admitted to the nursing wards, according to the latest figures from the National Coordination Center for Patients Spreading (LCPS). The cabinet should intervene if there are 100 or more admissions, according to the ‘Autumn Approach’ that was presented last month.
That number is likely to be reached in the coming days. Last week, the number of new admissions grew by 50 percent.
The number of new patients in intensive care is growing less rapidly. Last week, an average of about 18 Covid patients were admitted, a growth of 22 percent compared to last week. With a weekly average of 25 new admissions to the IC, the cabinet wants to intervene. That signal value has not yet been reached, but hospitals say that the pressure on IC is also becoming too high, so that operations risk being postponed.
Outgoing minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health, CDA) announced on Monday that new measures will be taken, but they will have to wait another week. De Jonge and outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD) will give a press conference next Tuesday at which new measures will be announced.
Basic measures
RIVM calls on people to adhere to the basic measures – washing hands, staying at home in case of complaints and testing, ventilating – and to keep one and a half meters away again and to work from home if possible. In this way, RIVM hopes that the number of infections can be inhibited. Over the past week, an average of more than 5,500 positive tests per day were received, about 50 percent more than last week. That number is growing among all age groups. The number is growing fastest among older age groups, with 85 percent more positive tests found among people over eighty. This partly explains why more people are being hospitalized.

In recent weeks, approximately as many vaccinated and unvaccinated people received a positive test result, the RIVM reports. These groups are not of the same size: about 83 percent of the twelve-year-olds had themselves vaccinated. Relatively speaking, the infection rate is therefore lower among vaccinated people: eight people per day per 100,000 vaccinated received a positive test result last week. For unvaccinated, this was 28.
Less to test street
In the case of infections, the proportions are probably different. The number of positive tests also depends on test readiness, but it is probably not equally high in both groups. Peilbureau I&O Research previously reported that unvaccinated people are less willing to go to the test street. Earlier it became clear that mainly unvaccinated people end up in hospital. Four out of five Covid patients in the ICUs are not vaccinated.
