Media reports say that Tesla cars sometimes inexplicably and for no reason pressed their brakes, prompting owners to submit more than 100 complaints over the past three months.
Last October, CEO Elon Musk said on his Twitter account that Tesla had to “roll back” version 10.3 of its full self-driving beta program due to phantom brake issues.
Specialists believe that the problem arose after the “controversial decision”, last year, to remove radar sensors from new cars Model 3 and Model Y.
Others say phantom braking is caused by the computers in Tesla cars “because they are not smart enough to distinguish between safe things and dangers”.
They added: “Some cases of fake braking are sudden and violent…the car thinks it is about to hit something, so it applies the brakes.”
