Do not get on the podium but still establish yourself as ‘driver of the day’: it can be summarized as follows Sprint Race of the round of Spa-Francorchamps in Formula 2, characterized by a well-chosen risk on the part of the MP Motorsport team which used a sudden Safety car to allow Felipe Drugovich to increase their overall lead over Theo Pourchaire. A race won by Liam Lawsonable to conquer the first place in the initial stages of the race without losing it until the checkered flag.
A test that, even before the departure, reserved an immediate twist with the withdrawal of Jehan Daruvala, forced to park his car on the side of the track during the deployment lap due to a petrol pump failure. The Indian, who should have started from second position, has thus vacated his box in view of the start, offering an ‘assist’ to Ralph Boschung to maintain his leadership when the red light goes out. The Swiss, able to defend himself from Lawson’s attacks during the first round, also took advantage of a shot to forget Pourchaire, overtaken at the start by the New Zealander and even slipped into fifth position, behind Verschoor and in front of Drugovich. At the start of lap 6, the top-3 therefore saw Lawson in the lead, followed by Boschung and Doohan. Behind them, Verschoor struggling to defend his position from the Pourchaire-Drugovich couple, despite no overtaking recorded until the eleventh lap.

During the latter, here is the decisive episode for the final classification: in full Pouhon, Logan Sargeant he loses control of his Carlin, crashing into the barriers and forcing the Race Direction to impose the Safety Car regime. Within seconds, the MP Motorsport team calls Drugovich back to the pits for a tire change, hoping to move up in the standings in the remaining laps with the freshest tires. A risky move, but one that will prove to be a winner for the Dutch manufacturer: at the exit of the safety car, and with only 4 laps to go, the Brazilian comeback from 12th to fourth final position, overcoming Pourchaire and increasing the gap from the French to 25 points. Conversely, Lawson flies to the finish line as a winner, with Doohan which passes under the checkered flag in 2nd place, overcoming an excellent Boschungreturning after a long period of rest due to injury.
