Motorsport.com had already anticipated 5 of the 6 tracks that would host the 6 Sprint Races of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship. Now Formula 1 itself has announced all the locations where they will be held.
The first of these will be held in Azerbaijan, on the Baku city track on April 30th. The second, however, at the Red Bull Ring (Austria) on 2 July, followed by Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) on 30 July.
The second three are as follows: Qatar, in Losail, on 8 October. Then, again in October, Austin, home of the Grand Prix of the Americas. Dulcis in fundo Interlagos on 5 November, site of the São Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil.
As for Baku, Spa-Francorchamps and Austin, it is the first time they will host a Sprint Race since this format was introduced in Formula 1 in 2021.
The Red Bull Ring has already hosted the Sprint Race in 2022, while Interlagos was one of the tracks where this short race was most successful thanks to the layout conformation that allows the drivers to make a high number of overtakings.
The Enzo and Dino Ferrari of Imola has been removed from the list. The Emilian track hosted the Sprint Race in 2022, but proved not to be suitable for such a format. Qatar has instead been given clearance for a Saturday race upon its return to the Formula 1 calendar.
Although F1 and the FIA are considering making the Sprint Race events in their own right, which do not affect the starting grid for Sunday’s race, things will remain the same in 2023: points will be awarded to the top 8 finishers in the Sprint Race and the result will determine the final starting grid of the Sunday grand prix.
