One of Ferrari’s main Achilles heels in the first half of the 2022 season is linked to the strategy mistakes made on several occasions that have often led to losing results that would have certainly allowed it to be closer to Red Bull at least in the Constructors’ World Championship.
On several occasions Mattia Binotto underlined how many choices made – even among the most criticized ones – in his opinion turned out to be spot on for the purpose of the result. The criticisms of public opinion and fans, however, have not faded even with the passing of the summer break.
The debacle of Spa-Francorchamps, where the Reds showed that they did not have the pace to fight with the Red Bulls at least in the Ardennes, and the mistake in the pits made with a co-author Charles Leclerc, have intensified the discontent of those who follow with passion the exploits of the Prancing Horse in Formula 1.
Carlos Sainz Jr. on the eve of the Dutch Grand Prix returned to this issue trying to give his own opinion on what happened. This is very similar to that already expressed by Binotto.
“It is very difficult to generalize, saying that we should have been more courageous in strategies, or more prudent. We should take each episode and analyze them independently. I’m pretty sure that, taken one by one, each result or conclusion can be different.”

“Maybe we could have been braver, or we should have made safer decisions. For me it’s about continually improving and always finding ways to make the right choices at the right time.”
“Over the course of the year there have been many occasions where we have made the right choices and no one has come to tell us, ‘You have made the right choice’, or no one has come to us to congratulate us.”
“But on the other hand, when there have been two or three occasions where in hindsight they have been wrong, there has been fierce criticism.”
In conclusion, Sainz admitted that everything done at Ferrari, including mistakes, is amplified. When he found himself in the same situation in other teams, the criticisms rained down on him at the time were much milder than the current ones. It is also true, however, that Ferrari has a completely different sounding board from almost all the rest of the competitors currently playing in Formula 1.
“For me in Ferrari everything is more difficult. When I was in McLaren, Toro Rosso and Renault, when a big mistake was made, nobody wanted to point it out.
