The Imola 1994 weekend is not just Ayrton Senna, but also Roland Ratzenberger. We cannot ignore that tragic Saturday 30 years ago where the 33-year-old Austrian lost his life in a terrible crash at the Villeneuve curve.
3 decades after the event, director Peter Levay decided to pay homage to Roland’s life and career by making a 4-episode docufilm available for free on YouTube.
Levay had already made a documentary for Amazon Prime Video Germany, but this is the first time that a docufilm dedicated to Ratzenberger has been made available in Italy.
Each episode lasts about 15 minutes and retraces Ratzenberger’s life starting from his childhood marked by a passion for cars in his city of Salzburg up to his arrival in Formula 1 with the Simtek team.
These episodes are made further interesting thanks to the exclusive interviews and anecdotes told by Roland’s parents, therefore Margit and Rudolf, by the former Toro Rosso and AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost, by David Brabham, Roland’s teammate at Simtek.
The documentary ends with the weekend of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, in Imola and the memory of Ratzenberger’s parents who, several years later, went to the site of the tragedy to once again remember their son, who died while chasing the own dream.
