Lewis Hamilton can breathe a sigh of relief. The seven-time world champion had been called up by the commissioners at the end of FP3 for not respecting the double yellow flags displayed.
At the end of the last free practice session, the Mercedes driver was summoned by the commissioners for not respecting the double yellow flag signal and not taking his foot off the accelerator as required in these situations.
Hamilton was listened to for about fifteen minutes and was accompanied by the stewards by a team representative. Analyzing the video images, however, the explanation that led to this convocation emerged.
According to the press release issued by the commissioners, it was highlighted that the activation of the luminous panel with a double yellow flag signal occurred accidentally for less than a second.
Analyzing the video of the camera car positioned on Hamilton’s car, it also emerged that no double yellow flag was waved and no panel was active when the Mercedes driver passed through the offending area. Furthermore, no warning appeared on the steering wheel of the W12 number 44.
Since no provision of the regulation was violated, the commissioners decided not to apply any penalty to the seven-time world champion.
As for the second disputed episode, the impeding of Nikita Mazepin, the commissioners applied a reprimand against Hamilton and fined Mercedes with 25,000 euros for not having communicated the arrival of the Russian from Haas to their driver.
