Sometimes even colors can speak. This is the case of the special livery that McLaren will wear on its MCL38s for the Monaco Grand Prix which will be held this weekend in Monte-Carlo.
The Woking team today revealed the color scheme that will distinguish the two single-seaters entrusted as usual to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri this weekend. Just look at the photos to understand who it refers to and, above all, dedicated to.
Basic yellow, with a blue and a green band: the colors of the helmet of Ayrton Senna, who passed away 30 years ago following the fatal injuries sustained in the Tamburello accident during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola.
The livery is a clear tribute to Ayrton. Yellow base, with a blue arrow (like the endplates of the front wing) on the nose and the entire rear – from the coca cola area and the final part of the bellies up to and including the rear wing – green. The only reference to the papaya color remains the profile of the flow diverters on the front hub carriers and the race number of the two drivers, which continues to find permanence on the nose and on the small vertical fin of the bonnet.
McLaren decided to pay homage to Senna on the city track of the Principality of Monaco as its most successful driver, thanks to 35 victories (of the 41 overall in F1) and three world titles, as well as having contributed to the conquest of 4 constructors’ championships.
Furthermore, the choice to pay homage to him in Monaco is also iconic. Ayrton won in Monte-Carlo 6 times, including 5 consecutively, from 1989 to 1993, at the wheel of a McLaren.
Not only the single-seaters, but also all team members – including drivers – will have dedicated clothing. To conclude, McLaren Automotive has decided to create a one-off of the McLaren Senna, called Senna Semper, also dressed in a livery dedicated to Ayrton which takes up the colors of his helmet.
“McLaren is proud to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary life and racing legacy of Ayrton Senna through this livery. Senna is revered to this day and is respected and recognized as the greatest driver in the history of Formula 1,” said Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing.
“He is also an icon and the most successful driver in McLaren’s history. His impact on the team has been enormous not only through his racing results, but also through his presence within the team, and now through his legacy, so it’s an honor to race for him on the track where he achieved his greatest success wearing yellow, blue and green.”
“This is how we collaborate on the ‘McLaren Senna presented by OKX’ campaign with Senna Global, in collaboration with our partners and McLaren Automotive. As it marks the 30th anniversary of Ayrton’s passing, the team has chosen to recognize and celebrate his life in one of his favorite locations in motorsport, Monaco. We look forward to racing in this livery this weekend.”
