Lewis Hamilton’s non-exciting period continues. In yesterday’s qualifying session in Monte Carlo, the seven-time world champion did not go beyond the eighth position, preceded by Fernando Alonso and George Russell, who ended up four tenths faster than his team-mate.
Hamilton had to complain about the final red flag which did not allow him to complete the last lap launched, but Lewis (sent to the track five minutes from the checkered flag) actually had one lap available to take advantage of the new tire. .

On that lap, however, Hamilton soon lifted his foot, and he explained the reason himself: “I set the mode of use of the power unit wrong – revealed Lewis – I should have done better, so it’s my fault”.
Russell’s sixth position partially consoled the team, but the more than seven tenths that separated the English driver from poleman Leclerc greatly reduced Mercedes’ ambitions. The ‘revisited’ W13 that debuted in Barcelona did not find a great feeling with the Monegasque track, and the travel speed of the slow corners was not up to the level of Red Bull and Mercedes and in several cases even of McLaren.
Toto Wolff spoke of a car too rigid for the characteristics of the Principality, underlining that, like in Barcelona, the car will perform better in the race, but in Monaco it is no guarantee of a comeback.
The engineers also used the work between Friday and Saturday for tests with drastic setup changes, necessary to collect data on the behavior of the car after the updates brought to the track last week in Montmelò.
