The FIA has decided to modify the AOM metric with which the technical stewards check the oscillations in the chassis in order to comply with the anti-porpoising rule that came into force on the occasion of the Belgian GP in Spa-Francorchamps.
Motorsport.com has learned that the algorithm has been modified for the Singapore Grand Prix to prevent some cars from going beyond the limits of the norm due to the strong fluctuations that will be caused by the city road surface.
We remind you that the FIA introduced in Canada the technical directive TD39 which had been issued following the complaints of some drivers who considered the hopping due to porpoising a cause of danger, to then adopt a metric on the oscillations of the chassis that the teams could not have overcome. , otherwise they would have been reported to the stewards to be sanctioned, up to the exclusion from the events.

After a series of very heated discussions, the legislation was finalized and entered into force from the Belgian Grand Prix. According to the indications that emerged, no team has so far gone beyond the allowed limits, having acquired useful data for a better understanding of the porpoising phenomenon.
However, there is an objective concern of the FIA that in some of the races between now and the end of the season, problems could emerge on bumpy tracks such as Singapore and Austin: with the initial algorithm measuring 10 J / kg per 100 km it is understood that on non-flat surfaces there is a risk that asphalt deformations can heavily affect the average of the data collected, regardless of the extent of porpoising.
Nikolas Tombazis, FIA technical delegate, wrote to the teams to warn them that the rule would be lightened: to prevent the metric readings from being affected by a track with roughness on the asphalt, it was decided not to take into account peaks that will go beyond forces of 7G, in the awareness that the distortions of data collection are not given by porpoising, but by asphalt and curbs.
The position taken by the FIA loosens the constraints: will there be those who will immediately be able to take advantage of it?
