Ferrari continues work with the F1-75 at Fiorano for the development of the Pirelli rain 2023 tyres. Today is Charles Leclerc’s turn who started lapping on his home track although there was a bit of high fog which didn’t affect the start of the work program envisaged by the Bicocca technicians with the track wet with a constant veil of water that was less than that of Tuesday.
Yesterday Carlos Sainz dedicated himself particularly to the full-wet, while today the Monegasque’s commitment is mainly aimed at the intermediates. Pirelli has brought new compounds with the aim of bringing forward the tire warm-up in order to evaluate whether it will be possible to start the 2023 season without the wet tires having to be pre-heated in thermo blankets.
The operation is complicated, but easier than with slicks, because the operating window of the Pirelli Cinturato tires can be triggered with decidedly lower temperatures. And, considering that the air temperature is precisely the winter temperature that the pilots will never find during the season (minimum 4 degrees and maximum 7 degrees), if the tests at Ferrari work, it will be reasonable to think that the Milanese manufacturer can ask the FIA to abolish the thermo blankets for the rain as early as the next championship, except that for the slicks the measure should start only from 2024.
The topic is still the subject of discussion, because the riders are pushing to keep the tires heated, while the teams would be willing to give up carrying heavy structures around the world that affect transport and lack of sustainability…
