Montreal: Mercedes on pole, McLaren the most solid
Qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix partially changed the F1 World Championship hierarchies. On the approach to Montreal, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren (by their own admission) they expected to be very close: which was only half the case, because among these teams the only one to place two cars in the top-10 was the team from Woking, while George Russell’s Mercedes took pole.
With third place for Lando Norris (21 thousandths from pole position) and fourth for Oscar Piastri, McLaren are hoping to repeat the success of Miami. Andrea Stella himself confirmed the improvements in slow speed (an important aspect in Montreal), but the man from Orvieto believes that Mercedes can confirm itself today: the one found in Brackley, according to him, was not an isolated exploit.
Stella’s words
“Some of the lap times they set in Monaco were, at that stage of the weekend, out of reach for us, even on low fuel and with the engine at full throttle. It was clear they had potential and I think they’re starting to learn how to tap into it“, commented the McLaren team principal.
“I think we have confirmation that our car works well at low speed: now we have a sequence of tests, and Canada was one of the important ones for us to confirm that we have made a step forward on low speed performance”.
