Colonel and former head of the DOP (Operational Department of the Military Police of the Federal District) Jorge Eduardo Naime Barreto testified this Thursday (16.Mar.2023) to the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) of the anti-democratic acts in the Legislative Chamber of Brasília. During the hearing, the colonel stated that the radical Bolsonarists who were in front of the Army’s HQ (Headquarters), in the federal capital, were in “a bubble” and that one of them even said he was an extraterrestrial.
“There was one who approached me and told me that he was an extraterrestrial, that he was infiltrated there and that as soon as the Army took over, the extraterrestrials would help the Army to take power. They consumed only their information, it was just what was said in the car, they were in a bubble”said the soldier.
Watch (38s):
Responsible for the sector that planned the security of the Esplanada dos Ministérios on the day of the acts, Barreto has been imprisoned since February 7th. The colonel was the target of the 5th phase of the Lesa Pátria operation, which investigates military personnel by default in confronting those involved in the destruction of buildings in Praça dos Três Poderes.
Barreto stated that there was resistance from the Army to carry out arrests in the extremist camp in front of the Force’s HQ (Headquarters) after the January 8 acts.
In testimony at the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District, the military reported that he participated in the operation to demobilize the extremist camp. However, the police were prevented from entering the site by an Army riot line.
JANUARY 8
Around 3 pm on Sunday, January 8, extremists invaded the National Congress after breaking through the protective barriers placed by the security forces of the Federal District and the National Force.
There, invaded the Green Hall of the Chamber of Deputies, an area that gives access to the plenary of the House. Voting equipment was vandalized. Extremists also used the Senate’s slide mat.
They then went to the Planalto Palace and vandalized several rooms at the seat of the Executive Branch.
Finally, they invaded the STF. They broke windows on the facade and reached the plenary of the Court, where they pulled chairs from the floor and the Coat of Arms of the Republic – which was attached to the wall of the plenary of the Court.
The acts were carried out by people, most of them wearing t-shirts from the Brazilian soccer team, green and yellow clothes and carrying the Brazilian flag on the back. They claimed to be patriots and advocated military intervention (in practice, a coup d’état) to overthrow the president’s government. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT).
