Extremadura achieves a historical record with 22.5 million euros received in three years in its participation in the Horizon Europe Programthe European framework for financing research and innovation, achieving that amount in the first three years (2021-2023), and almost doubling the 12.5 million euros obtained in the seven years of the previous program, Horizon 2020 (2014-2020).
This advance has allowed the region rise four positions in the ranking of autonomous communitiesleaving behind its historical bottom position and consolidating itself as a benchmark in key areas for its development. Thus, Extremadura catches up with Cantabria in fundraising, ahead of Castilla-La Mancha, the Balearic Islands and La Rioja.
Sectors such as bioeconomy, natural resources, climate and agri-food research stand out as the main recipients of funds in Extremadura, accumulating 16 of the 22.5 million obtained. These areas not only reflect the region’s strategic and intelligent specialization, but also its potential to lead sustainable and competitive transformations.
Entities like FUNDECYT-PCTEXwhich has attracted the largest number of projects with a total of nine, and the University of Extremadura (UEx), with eight projects, have played a key role in this success. In the private sphere, the company NATAC stands out, which leads the financial return obtained by the region.
The Government of Extremadura reaffirms its commitment to the internationalization of its research and innovation system, strengthening the coordination of proposals through initiatives such as the European Projects Office of the Extremadura System of Science, Technology and Innovation (OPE-SECTI), which is coordinated by FUNDECYT. -PCTEX and UEx.
In addition, specific plans are being developed to promote emerging areas of specialization, such as health and energy, which show great potential in the region and whose impact will begin to balance the thematic balance with the agri-food sector in the coming years.
Through the specialized technicians of OPE-SECTI, the Government of Extremadura offers this type of public and free services to support the participation of companies, researchers and organizations in large European R&D programs, actions that are co-financed. through the funds of the FEDER Extremadura 2021-2027 Program within the framework of the TE “Internationalization of R&D&i”.
