After a summery weekend, the rain is coming back to Germany. “A lot of wet” awaits us in the coming week.
Munich – Whether it’s a handcart ride, a visit to a beer garden or a hiking trip: on Ascension Day (May 9th), the weather in Germany was at its best in many places. The summery weather is expected to continue over the bridge day and the following weekend, but another change in the weather is already on the horizon. “Something big is coming to us,” warns qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung in the title of his weather forecast.
Weather in Germany: Long weekend remains friendly – Mother’s Day will be sunny
First of all, the high “Thomas” will continue to provide lots of sunshine from north to south in Germany on Friday (May 10th). The temperatures rose to up to 23 degrees in the north and up to 25 degrees in the south. “On the edge of an extensive high centered over the North Sea, the air mass near us can warm up day by day,” he said German Weather Service (DWD). Good news for everyone who took the bridge day off and can enjoy a sunny day. But even those who don’t have an extra day off can be happy, because the beautiful weather lasts over the weekend.
On Saturday (May 11th) “we can expect wonderful sunshine from Flensburg to Garmisch-Partenkirchen,” said Jung. “Perfect for gardening, for excursions, for hikes,” says Jung. The temperatures are between 19 and 26 degrees, although a summer day is even possible in the southwest.
A family trip can also be undertaken on Mother’s Day, Sunday (May 12th) – the weather remains stable. “Lots of sunshine there too. A few showers and thunderstorms will appear in the southwest, first at the start of the day and then in the afternoon. “The temperatures in advance are probably very warm,” explains the meteorologist. In the west and southwest temperatures of 25 to 28 degrees are reached, while otherwise the values are between 18 and 24 degrees.
After Mother’s Day, the change in weather hits Germany with showers and thunderstorms
But from Monday, May 13th, a change in the weather is imminent. In the west and southwest there will be showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain, squalls and hail. “There can sometimes be limited storms,” warns Jung. The east, on the other hand, can once again enjoy a lot of sunshine at 23 to 25 degrees. In the west the temperatures are 21 to 23 degrees.
The DWD added: “On Monday, from the west/southwest and the Alpine region to the center, partly strong thunderstorms with heavy rain of around 25 l/sqm in one hour, locally also severe. Noticeable heavy rain lasting several hours cannot be ruled out.” Dominik Jung von wetter.net explains: “A major change in the weather comes to us in Germany. Several weather fronts are passing over us one after the other, some with heavy showers and thunderstorms – and some of them are tough.” In the coming week, peak values of up to 80 to 90 liters of rain per square meter could be reached in northern Germany. In the east it would be 30 to 40 liters, in the middle of the country up to 50 liters per square meter.
“Increasingly wet, partly really wet”: downpours and thunderstorms expected from Tuesday – will Pentecost also be a disaster?
From Tuesday, May 14th, the temperatures will cool down and it will become “increasingly wet, sometimes really wet with heavy downpours and thunderstorms. “The temperatures take a little dip and things go down,” says Jung. In the western half, temperatures drop to 14 to 16 degrees. The east continues to benefit from the persistent summer air and gets sunshine – it will be up to 25 degrees in the Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony area.
The Germany-wide change will come from Wednesday. Lots of clouds, showers, downpours and heavy rain are moving over large parts of the country. Temperatures range between 15 and a maximum of 21 degrees in some regions. “This changeable weather situation can probably continue next weekend and that would be the Pentecost weekend – that would literally fall apart,” predicts Jung.
By May 26th the temperatures should be from the current 23 to 24 degrees to 18 to 19 degrees. Outliers of up to 30 degrees are possible, but overall it should remain changeable. (jh)
