Temperatures are falling again in Germany. After last week’s heatwave, we might even see the first snow soon.
Kassel – Autumn is finally upon us: While the first days of September were still summery hot with temperatures reaching 30 degrees, it is now getting much cooler: A clear change in the weather is imminent. The reason for this is a cold front that is causing heavy rainfall, particularly in eastern Germany.
However, it could be as unusually warm for a long time as this year more often in the future. An interactive map currently shows that the capital Berlin could soon feel similar to Italy in terms of climate – an effect of climate change.
Temperatures fall: cold front brings cool autumn weather to Germany
From Monday (September 9) the cooler weather is expected, according to the German Weather Service for the first time. Temperatures will drop to 17 to 22 degrees. On Tuesday (September 10th) and Wednesday (September 11th) it will remain very cloudy and windy, with temperatures between 15 and 9 degrees. Heavy thunderstorms are also possible.
On Thursday (September 12th) it will be particularly cold with temperatures between 7 and 11 degrees, with isolated rain showers expected. On Friday (September 13th) temperatures could even fall to 5 degrees. The weather will calm down a bit over the weekend, but temperatures will only rise slightly. Cool and rainy autumn weather is expected to continue in the coming weeks.

First snowfall in sight: cold front moves across Germany
What is particularly surprising after the recent heat is that the drop in temperature also causes the snow line in the Alps to drop to 1,300 metres. According to wetter.de Snowflakes could even mix with the rain on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains and the Fichtelberg in the Ore Mountains. For hikers who are still on holiday, this could pose an unexpected challenge. They should prepare well for the possibility of snowfall.
However, snow could also fall at lower altitudes: The graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung from wetter.net announces in his latest weather video even the first snow for parts of Germany. Accordingly, there may be wet snowflakes or sleet even below 1000 m on Thursday morning (September 12th) and Friday morning (September 13th). This means that the first snowflakes could also fall in Oberstdorf or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. (jus)
