The municipality of Torre Pacheco has been able to take advantage of the opportunity offered by European funds to promote the development of its territory and favor the quality of life of the residents with improvements in infrastructure. Among these projects is the ‘Sustainable Cycling Platform and Safe Parking of Torre Pacheco’, which is part of the Torre Pacheco 2030 Urban Agenda Action Plan ‘Much more than a Territory’, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs. Its goal is to build a greener, digital and more resilient area with the creation of a complete, cohesive, safe, accessible and sustainable cycling network that will promote modal change towards less polluting means, and that will provide an alternative to the mobility needs generated by the main driving centers of the municipality.
Thus, the construction of 6,600 linear meters of new two-way lanes reserved for bicycles and personal mobility vehicles is proposed, and Torre Pacheco will be connected from West to East, from the existing lanes coming from Ifepa, passing through the urban center, to the municipal limit with Los Alcázares and the Mar Menor, connecting the main driving centers of mobility, such as relevant leisure centers and work centers. In addition, intermodality between public transport and bicycles will be favored and 141 new bike racks with double anchorage and electronic key lock will be installed. With all this, the aim is to improve air quality, reduce CO2 emissions in the municipality, promote modal split by increasing the use of bicycles and other personal mobility vehicles, improve road safety and promote health. of citizens, among others.
The project ‘The Memory of Water: Renaturation of the Rambla Sur for flood prevention in the urban center of Torre Pacheco and neighboring municipalities’ began last November and will see its works completed in July 2025. Thanks to the financing of funds Europeans, it seeks to undertake infrastructures that respond to the flood problems that exist in this area of the urban nucleus, intervening in 1,410 meters of the riverbed of the boulevard. It is conceived as “a project that transforms the city and lasts over time”, which returns part of the spaces that have been artificially occupied to the boulevard, and redefines a new connected and renaturalized urban space for the citizen, becoming the green lung from Torre Pacheco. This will make it possible to create a linear urban space integrated into the city that will favor urban rebalancing between the two separate zones, and two floodplain parks will be projected, one located at the headwaters and the other just at the end of the action with the aim of expanding the channel and the volume of water contained.
Efficiency, sustainability and trade
The Roldán Civic Center is another point that will undergo improvements thanks to European funds. Understood as the cultural and social epicenter of the district since 1982, its reform seeks to accommodate and house the different realities of the place in a unitary and interchangeable way, for associations and activities of the inhabitants of Roldán and surroundings, due to the public space. The focus of the reform is global to achieve the optimization of the use of space and building systems, betting on energy efficiency to save 77.47% energy savings compared to the original building of 1982. For this, investment will be made in the improvement integral part of the thermal envelope of the building.
Its downtown shopping area will also be transformed. Torre Pacheco receives 2 million euros from European funds to make the ‘MerKadeando’ project a reality, with the transformation of this area that includes Avenida de Fontes, Paseo Villa Esperanza and adjacent squares and spaces, as well as the area where Currently the weekly market is located in the civic center. Shading, both plant and artificial, will be installed, new urban furniture, landscaping, new drainage paving, fountains, a comprehensive accessibility solution for people with reduced mobility, as well as tactical urban planning actions with which to revitalize this integrated commercial area.
New technologies are also part of the commitment, with a pilot digitization project that includes means and training for street vendors, as well as for the rest of the merchants in the area. The project includes a clear commitment to sustainability, with the creation of a recycling and circular economy system, the installation of solar panels on top of the shaded areas, as well as the promotion of local products and ‘km 0’ to avoid emissions and encourage consumption in local businesses.
