The widespread impression is that the G7 in Italy on 13-15 June it will not affect the international crises that scare the world. Ukraine, Gaza, United States divided more than ever with the fear of a civil war. For Massimo Cacciari, philosopher, essayist and politician, there are no bright horizons. This is what he explains in an interview with Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia.

Cacciari speaks of “a moment of particular risk for democracy given the international situation. Because, when there is war, some fundamental rights and some spaces of freedom that seem usual and normal in times of peace, physiologically, disappear. It is like this, and it has always been like this throughout history. The dangers for democracy are therefore infinitely more serious today than in the recent past, because we have entered a state of war from which unfortunately no one seems to want to escape.”

For the philosopher, Europe is a “sleepwalker” because in this situation he did nothing and had absolutely no independent voice regarding these tragedies. She was unable to prevent them, which she could very well have done because they were all predictable, much less was she able to stop them, that is, to resolve their causes, to intervene. It is therefore a Europe that is completely voiceless, devoid of any autonomy in foreign, international and geopolitical policy, and is totally under the thumb of the United States of America for the moment, but now they are not doing well either.”

And Cacciari expects nothing from the G7: “Indeed, we hope that Stoltenberg-style perspectives do not emerge, otherwise it would mean going straight to World War III. We therefore hope, at least, that the most unfortunate hypotheses will be avoided. But, I repeat, we are in a situation in which the country is the leader of the West.” Will the Pope’s presence have an impact? “Certainly yes, because the only reasonable voice I have listened to in recent years is that of the Pope. So yes, I hope he can speak and have some influence on the development of the work of the G7″.
