Fiat he has not always had satisfaction from the tests Euro NCAP carried out over the years. In 2018, the Panda model suffered the shame of zero stars in the crash test, a result only partially redeemed by the four stars obtained by 500e. Thanks to the vans, however, today the Turin house can sing victory. Indeed Euro NCAP has nominated Ducato as the safest van in the year 2022 with even platinum certification.
Ducato beat all its rivals in the confrontation operated by Euro NCAP, even putting itself behind Ford Transit, Mercedes Vito and Volkswagen Transporter. Last year the Fiat model was classified with a bronze, but the vehicle underwent a major safety revamp and is now equipped with an advanced ADAS sensor set. The 88% overall score puts it ahead of the other Stellantis vehicles it shares its platform with – Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Jumper and Opel Movano – which have not gotten the same upgrade in terms of equipment.
In the Ducato tests the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system worked well at low speeds. Unlike last year, the system is now able to recognize vulnerable road users. In the tests with cyclist, the Ducato avoided the collision in all scenarios and scored the maximum points. Lane Keeping Assist was rated as good as new and the speed limiter was also rated satisfactory.
Out of nineteen vans tested, only one was found to be ‘not recommended’ by Euro NCAP. This is Nissan Interstar, formerly known as NV400, van which is not equipped with an emergency braking system. The twin Renault Master was awarded the bronze medal. However, Renault can be happy for the Trafic, a van that has improved significantly compared to 2021 with the acquisition of a silver ranking.
Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen said: “We’re seeing promising signs: Commercial vans are being upgraded with more advanced safety systems, bridging the gap with the passenger car segment. Overall, it appears manufacturers are starting to take safety more seriously in this segment, and while there is still a long way to go, we’re happy with the improvements – some modest, some impressive – we’ve seen over the past year.“.
