Pol Espargaro can breathe a sigh of relief: the tests he underwent at the Hospital 9 de octubre in Valencia after the crash in the third free practice session this morning ruled out the presence of fractures, even if his participation in the final race of the 2021 MotoGP season remains in doubt.
The Repsol Honda rider crashed quite violently at Turn 13 of the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, when FP3 was about a quarter of an hour away. He suffered a loss of rear grip in the long left corner and his RC213V literally threw him into the air.
“Polyccio” landed heavily on his right side and was immediately carried away on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. Once he arrived at the medical center, where he underwent a first check-up, he was then evacuated to the hospital in Valencia.
Espargaro was suffering from severe chest pain on his right side and therefore it was feared that he might have some fractured ribs. Which was fortunately averted by the CT scan.
“The TAC ruled out fractures,” team manager Alberto Puig told DANZ. “He suffered a very strong blow to the ribs, but nothing is broken and that’s the most important thing.”
The youngest of the Espargaro brothers did not take part in qualifying this afternoon but, as mentioned, his presence is not certain even for tomorrow’s race.
“There is no plan yet, if he’s in a lot of pain he can’t ride the bike, it’s obvious. If we were playing the World Championship, it would be a different story, but that’s not the case. Let’s let him come back and see how he’s doing, then we’ll decide. “confirmed Puig.
After all, a prudent attitude could make sense for the Granollers rider, given that a fundamental test is scheduled for Thursday and Friday next week in Jerez, in which Honda will have to decide on the basis of the 2022 bike, and will already have to do it without being able to count on Marc Marquez, stopped by a problem of diplopia (double vision) accused after an accident while training with an off-road bike.
A relapse of an injury he had already had in 2011, when he crashed during the free practices of Moto2 in Malaysia, which had questioned the continuation of his career, but from which he had returned and then won his six titles in the premier class.
