In Brazil, the 5 federal penitentiaries classified as maximum security prisons have an advanced surveillance system that includes ambient sound capture and video monitoring. The prison surveillance material is replicated, in real time, to Senappen's headquarters, in Brasília.
In addition to Mossoró, the federal system has maximum security prisons in Catanduvas (PR), Campo Grande (MS), Porto Velho (RO) and Brasília (DF).
According to investigations, the escape in Mossoró was due to flaws in the structure of the prison, which was undergoing renovations. As a result, the Ministry of Justice determined on February 22 that daily searches be carried out in the places where prisoners are held in all penitentiaries.
The agency also demanded the immediate replacement of cameras that are inoperative or that do not meet the recommended specifications for the country's Federal Penal Units.
