The eruption of an underwater volcano in the Tonga archipelago region puts the South Pacific on alert.
According to information from BBC Brazil, some images circulating on social media show water hitting several houses. (See video below).
Witnesses also said ash fell on Tonga’s capital Nuku’alofa, which is just 65 km north of the volcano.
So far, there are no reports of injuries.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported, by twitter, that the waves reached 1.2 meters. Alerts were issued for some Australian territories such as Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island.
Other countries in the region, such as Fiji and New Zealand, have also issued warnings to residents, according to a report by the Deutsche Welle.
In the United States, the National Tsunami Warning Center has issued warnings for regions in the states of Alaska and Hawaii.
