“I fulfilled the objectives I agreed with the company in 2019, when I resumed Globoplay, and at 49 years of age I made the decision to move on to a new personal and professional cycle”, he wrote Brêtas on his profile on X (formerly Twitter), when announcing his departure.
Globo's CEO, Paulo Marinho, released an internal statement about Brêtas' departure. He thanked the director and wished Belmar success.
Segundo Marinho, Brêtas “I wanted to follow new professional paths” when he looked for him at the end of 2023.

“A few months ago, Erick Brêtas approached me to share his reflections on his career moment and remind me that in this 1st quarter of 2024, Globoplay would be achieving the objectives agreed between the company and him in 2019, when he resumed command of the platform . His duty was fulfilled and, after 26 years of dedication to Globo, he wanted to follow new professional paths, with the certainty that the company's digital strategy is consolidated and will continue on its path to success.
“Erick built a legacy, leaving his mark at every stage, always wanting to do things differently, transform and innovate. He began as an intern in April 1997 and continued his career in Journalism at TV Globo, where he held prominent positions as editor-in-chief of 'Jornal da Globo' and regional director of Journalism in Rio. In this position, in fact, he was one of the leaders of team that won the International Emmy, in 2011, in the News category. His restless and curious profile made him explore other opportunities, diving into digital. Later, in 2015, his search for something new would lead him to lead the creation of Globoplay, which helped to reaffirm our strategy of approaching and offering directly to the Brazilian consumer.
“In order to move forward, it was necessary to get to know other markets, map new partners, investment opportunities and seek out what was most modern in the world's innovation hub: Silicon Valley. There, as business director, Erick connected Globo to cutting-edge technology companies, which contributed to accelerating our digital transformation process. After almost two years of living abroad, he returned to resume Globoplay, bringing with him the necessary repertoire to boost the evolution of our platform.
“During the unification of the companies, Erick led the creation of the Digital Products and Services area, which concentrated, in addition to our streaming platform, a portfolio of websites and products that lead their segments in the digital environment – G1, GE, GShow, Globo .Com and Cartola. A few years later, he took over Canals Pagos, Negócios Internacionais and Globo Filmes, resulting in the directorship of Digital Products and Canals Pais.
“At Globoplay, the diversity of content represented by Globo channels and our portfolio of originals attracted millions of subscribers and consolidated our service as one of the few regional streaming players capable of competing, in their country, with global platforms. Erick says goodbye, leaving important milestones for Globo and for all of us.
“To take on the leadership of Digital Products and Paid Channels, I invited Manuel Belmar, current director of Finance, Legal and Infrastructure, an area that will continue under his management.
“Belmar has a solid and successful executive trajectory, inside and outside Globo. He joined the Group in 2003, as general manager of treasury at Infoglobo, and was later promoted to financial director. In 2009, he took over as Globosat's financial and management director. A few years later, he expanded his scope, becoming operations director, also having among his responsibilities the fronts of technology and engineering, advertising sales and digital transformation. During the UMASOGLOBO Program, he led the group that worked on building the vision and the D2C model – direct to consumer – adding his refined strategic capacity and mastery of our business and the market. His leadership style is recognized by everyone and is very aligned with our values and our Culture.
“Belmar will follow its commitments to increasingly seek the growth of Globo’s digital products, manage the portfolio of the Digital Products and Paid Channels area, ensuring balance between business models, and explore different segments, in accordance with the evolution of consumer habits, maintaining focus on increasingly relevant results that meet the needs of the Brazilian public, today and in the future.
“On behalf of myself and my family, I thank Erick for his commitment and dedication to Globo over these years. To Belmar, I wish you much success in your new challenge.
“Paulo Marino
“Director-president of Globo.”
