Yesterday, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed two framework agreements for bilateral cooperation and 24 memorandums of understanding in various fields.
Al-Sudani said, in a joint press conference with Erdogan, who is currently visiting Iraq, that the two countries signed a strategic framework agreement to be a road map for building sustainable strategic cooperation in all fields, from which permanent committees for security, energy, and economy will emerge.
He added that they also signed a cooperation agreement on water, which includes implementing joint projects related to improving water management in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, implementing development projects and exchanging experiences in the field of modernizing irrigation systems and modern technologies, and will continue for ten years.
Al-Sudani indicated that they also sponsored the signing of 24 memorandums of understanding between the two countries in various fields and sectors, pointing out that they discussed bilateral security coordination to confront the challenges posed by the presence of armed elements that may cooperate with terrorism and violate the security of the two countries, as well as the presence of soft areas that need more control and stability. The Iraqi Prime Minister stressed that the security of Iraq and Turkey is one indivisible unit, saying: “We adhere to not allowing any force to use the land of Iraq as a launching pad for attacking the neighborhood.”
Al-Sudani indicated that he agreed with President Erdogan on security cooperation that would achieve stability in both countries.
In turn, Erdogan said that the agreements and memoranda signed constitute a turning point in bilateral relations between the two countries, indicating that the two parties will form joint permanent committees to ensure continuity and monitor the implementation of those agreements and supervise technical negotiations in many fields.
He added: “The strategic framework agreement for joint cooperation that we signed with the Iraqi Prime Minister constitutes a strong road map.” He explained that the discussions also focused on cooperation in the field of security and combating terrorism, as it was one of the most important items discussed.
The expanded discussions session was preceded by a bilateral meeting between Sudanese and Erdogan, which discussed the overall relations between the two countries and ways to develop them in various sectors and files of common interest.
He also discussed developments in events in the region, stressing the importance of coordinating positions, and ways to prevent the spread of conflict and tensions in the region.

In Baghdad, Erdogan met with his Iraqi counterpart, Abdul Latif Rashid, at the Presidential Palace.
The Turkish Presidency's Communications Department stated, in a statement, that Erdogan discussed with his Iraqi counterpart bilateral relations between the two countries, regional and global issues, and the fight against terrorism.
This is the first visit of Turkish President Erdogan to Iraq in 13 years, and he is currently heading a large official delegation that includes a number of ministers, and it takes one day.
