The Catalan and Basque independentists in Congress, ERC and EH Bildu, have made this Friday a call to the Government of Pedro Sánchez to move “from words to deeds” if it wants to receive the support of these two groups in the parliamentary processing of the General State Budgets for 2022. These two formations, which with their votes allowed the economic project to save the whole time amendments, have insisted that they will not practice the “policy of blockade” and remain willing to negotiate approval of the accounts, but at the same time they have warned that their desire to reach an agreement should not be understood as “a blank check”, the spokesperson for EH Bildu in the Lower House stated in a hearing in San Sebastián, Mertxe Aizpurua.
At the same time that Aizpurua and the leader of this party, Arnaldo Otegi, explained at their headquarters in San Sebastian where the budget negotiations with the Executive are, in Barcelona the deputy general secretary and ERC spokesperson, Marta Vilalta, were doing the same. and the deputy in Congress Montse Bassa. The two parties go hand in hand in this matter. The harmony is complete, according to Otegi, and it is shown in the package of amendments that these groups have jointly presented “to achieve social, economic and territorial improvements” for Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarra.
“The ball is in the wing of the Government of Madrid”, has affirmed Otegi. ERC and EH Bildu are working to “go to the end of the negotiation and approve the budgets,” but the support will not be free, Aizpurua and Otegi have remarked. They have reminded the head of the central executive that he cannot accommodate himself in the idea that the independentistas will never side with the right-wing parties: “A government cannot be sustained on the idea that the alternative is worse.” With this, Otegi wanted to say that Sánchez “has to show that this Government is better in the social and national sphere”, and that the support that he has received from ERC and EH Bildu since Sánchez’s inauguration is due to the objective of the independentistas of “To face the right and the extreme right”.
With a traced message, Vilalta has affirmed that his will “is not blocking”, but the votes of the Republicans, he specified, “are not free or in exchange for nothing”: “On the contrary, they must be won, they must be won. win the Government ”. The messages launched from San Sebastián were coordinated with those from Barcelona.
For Vilalta, the Government “is not acting up to the moment, nor is it being aware that it must win” the support of these two formations, and has warned that the decision of the PSOE and United We Can to support the plenary session of Congress to the candidates proposed by the PP to renew the Constitutional Court.
Otegi has insisted that there is no interest in “blocking” the renewal of the accounts, but has demanded “steps” and “go from words to deeds.” Aizpurua has said it differently: “We are willing to continue negotiating to reach a good agreement. But we also say with the same clarity that the Government has to win our 5 votes and the 13 of ERC if it wants to keep open a window of opportunity ”. The deputy added that the government representatives have not yet responded positively to her proposals, which she described as “ambitious, sensible and feasible”, and that they are aimed at “expanding and respecting the basic rights of Basques and Catalans” in economic matters and territorial, as well as in the “defense of languages” of these two territories.
